2. Gesundheits-Apps und Markt
[2. Health Apps and the Market]
Summary
Due to the rapid advancements of technical innovations and the large number of (commercial as well as private) developers and apps, coupled with low barriers for publishing apps, the market situation for health apps is quite confusing.
The number of health related apps within the categories “medicine” as well as “fitness and health” available in the stores of the two biggest platforms surpasses 100,000 apps by far and these apps cover many different subjects. However, only very few developers of health related apps are able to realize commercial success based on the sales mechanisms (e.g. commercial apps, in-app sales, subscriptions) that are possible within the stores. On the users’ side, the picture is just as diverse. Nowadays, many people already have access to mobile devices and thus, there is a wide range of (potential) users of health related apps (young and old people, professional users as well as laypersons, those who are only interested in their health as well as those with acute or chronic conditions). Al these users have different levels of knowledge or potentially present with various handicaps and use the apps in varying settings as well as for varying purposes. For users, choosing the "right" health app is not an easy task. While for some areas, e.g. reference apps, patient diaries or fitness and wellness apps there is an abundance of apps one can choose from, there are often only few apps for those with additional requirements (e.g. barrier free offers) or rare conditions. As an aggravating factor, the store descriptions of many apps leave much to be desired. Often, only few details about the provided functionalities and contents are provided. There is also often a lack of information about potential limitations, data protection or even the manufacturers themselves. |
